There are several reasons why hamsters gnaw on their cages at night. Generally, you can avoid this behavior by choosing a larger acrylic cage. For more details, you can refer to this article.
The odor is not related to the cage itself. If you notice a strong smell in the cage, you can take the following measures:
- Provide litter for the hamster. Hamsters are pets that can be trained to use a specific spot for their bathroom needs. If you don’t provide litter, they may choose a random spot to urinate. The smell usually comes from their urine, especially during mating season, so you need to regularly change the litter or dispose of the bedding where they go to the bathroom.
- Regularly change the bedding and clean up urine. Hamster droppings and any food they hoard can ferment and produce odors, so a thorough cleaning and bedding change should be done periodically (for example, every week to month, depending on the thickness of the bedding).
- Maintain good ventilation. Ensuring that the hamster lives in a dry environment can help prevent bacterial growth and reduce odors.
The cage will not get scratched unless it is intentionally scraped. However, some damage may occur from bumps and collisions. Hamsters are unlikely to cause significant damage to the cage, especially if it is made of smooth acrylic material.
KiddlyFun cages are designed with ventilation, so you don’t need to worry about the enclosed space. Providing a well-ventilated environment, regularly changing the bedding, and offering a designated bathroom area for the hamster are fundamental ways to address odor issues.
KiddlyFun cages are designed for easy cleaning, allowing you to simply remove the top half to change the bedding. You can check the corresponding product detail page for more information.
Acrylic hamster cages have the advantage of being clear and transparent, and they are lighter than glass, making them less likely to break. However, like glass, they can get scratched, but as long as you don’t intentionally damage them, they should be fine. Additionally, although KiddlyFun’s acrylic cages are made with thicker material, it is still not recommended to stack heavy items on top of the cage.
KiddlyFun is very concerned about hamster health. Excessive dust in bedding can cause serious lung damage to hamsters. Therefore, all of KiddlyFun’s bedding is carefully selected and sifted multiple times to ensure it is low in dust, high in quality, soft, and provides good insulation.

Hamsters are great pets for those who may have long working hours, live in small apartments, or don’t want to spend too much money on a pet. Since hamsters are solitary animals, they don’t require companionship from other pets or their owners. Even if you have a busy work schedule and can’t spend much time playing with your hamster, it’s perfectly fine. Additionally, hamsters need much less living space compared to cats or dogs; you only need to provide a suitably sized cage. Finally, hamsters are also budget-friendly, making them ideal for beginners or those looking to minimize expenses. If you want to save money, you can read this article, which offers many tips for keeping hamsters on a budget.
Compared to pets like cats and dogs, hamsters have very little body odor. They are also very clean animals; they groom themselves with their mouths and can be trained to use a specific spot for their bathroom needs. The odor usually comes from their urine or decaying food. If you provide litter and regularly change the bedding, there shouldn’t be any smell. Additionally, a hamster’s body odor may become stronger during mating season.
Sneezing in hamsters may be caused by a cold or excessive dust in their environment. Given that your hamster is also scratching its nose, it likely indicates that there is too much dust in its living space. Check the bedding material to see if there are issues; for example, if you’re using wood shavings, ensure they are properly sifted to remove excess dust. If possible, use a finer sieve to sift out the dust repeatedly. KiddlyFun is very concerned about hamster health, and the bedding we use is dust-free and made from soft, comfortable white poplar wood.
